Dance is one of the best activities for improving fitness, mental agility, health and well-being. It is especially beneficial for the elderly to help brain functionality and fitness and also for children to help build confidence, motor skills and flexibility.
There’s one business in the Mountains which has been offering these benefits to people for 17 years, the Blue Mountains Academy of Dance.
Principal Anthea Taylor has over 30 years’ teaching experience and has worked as a professional ballet dancer with establishments including NSW Dance Company, Ballet West and Hunter Valley Ballet Company. “After dancing professionally I wanted to pass on my skills and love of dance in my local community,” she said.
BMDA offers dance classes for all ages, from toddlers to seniors in ballet and contemporary styles. “This is a community ballet school for everyone of all ages and abilities. We make dance accessible and magical,” Anthea said. Students also get the chance to be a part of the academy’s end of year concerts and productions.
Ms Taylor has successfully helped her students to develop their passion for dance. Those interested in pursuing careers in dance, she has helped to become teachers and members of professional dance companies. Several of her former students have gone on to open their own local dance schools.
“This business is devoted to the spirit of community and is welcoming to everyone with an interest in dance,” she said.
