Blue Mountains Musical Society is set to impress with their upcoming, electrifying We Will Rock You.
Taking charge of the epic endeavour are experienced creatives and close friends, director Linda Aubrecht, and choreographer Bec Blackwell. The pair first met in 2008 at an LKM mums’ dance class, and quickly bonded over their mutual love of performance.
The Blue Mountains residents are stalwarts of the musical society. Aubrecht joined in 2012, and just two years later Blackwell became a member. Their past involvement has included performing, choreographing, costume and set designing, and producing.
The duo previously collaborated for the society in Cats and The Little Mermaid; both with Aubrecht as the choreographer, and Blackwell as the dance captain. Most recently they switched roles with Blackwell as the choreographer, and Aubrecht as the dance captain for Urinetown.
“The trust and ease of being good friends helps us understand each other’s vision. We are comfortable enough to provide and accept constructive criticism. We also enjoy a lot of laughs together,” said Blackwell.
Aubrecht is delighted to be directing a show that features the iconic music of Queen. She was also drawn to the witty script littered with comedic, pop culture references. While We Will Rock You marks Aubrecht’s directorial debut for the society, she is eager to display her expertise finely honed through past credits with the society, professional figure skating, and dance teaching. Her performance highlights include successfully auditioning for her skating hero overseas, and a spot in Dancing On Ice as the professional skating partner of Today Show host, Karl Stefanovic.
As the choreographer of We Will Rock You, Blackwell is relishing putting the performers through their paces. She explains contrasting choreographic styles represent the different groups of characters.
Set in a futuristic world, members of the corporate Global Soft “dance with the uniform precision of robots, while the Bohemians are more experimental”. The delicate balance of intricate precision, and free flowing movement is visually spectacular. Aside from her experience choreographing for the society, Blackwell is also drawing on her nine years choreographing in dance studios and theatre groups.
Aubrecht and Blackwell are grateful for the assistance of the talented team surrounding them, which includes music director extraordinaire, Jem Harding. Aubrecht reveals the support of Blackwell and Harding has been immeasurable, “They are the best people I could imagine undertaking this journey with.”
Keen for audiences to witness the powerful and innovative creation, Aubrecht said she is “loving the opportunity to reinvent and reimagine theatre”.
The pair promise theatre rhapsody, with an extremely talented cast, and an eye-catching spectacle of costumes, lighting and audio visual effects combining in a musical theatre masterpiece.
