The Drive program held another successful basic car care workshop at Blue Mountains Mazda in Medlow Bath on September 4.

Dealer principal Andrew Macarthur shared his knowledge on car basics with the women attending, including changing a tyre, checking oil and general maintenance.

Participants were also provided with information about purchasing a car and what best to do in different driving situations.

The Drive program aims to empower women and families to gain their driver's licences, from going for their learner’s permit, providing professional driving lessons with a driving school, and building up driving hours to get a provisional licence.

The program is a partnership of Thrive Services and Blue Mountains Women's Health and Resource Centre (BMWHRC).

The program includes support and lessons to women (aged 25 years and over) and families who have experienced domestic violence and/or financial disadvantage.

The program aims to increase choice, safety, social and housing opportunities, and boost self-esteem and independence.

Thrive Services’ executive officer Angelique Sasagi said “the benefits and importance that the Drive program provides has made a positive difference to the women and families who have participated in it”.

“We’ve managed to extend the Drive program through donations and fundraising and limited grants, however at this stage we have no funding beyond December 2018,” Ms Sasagi said.

“We are looking at some fundraising and seeking donations from businesses and the community to allow us to continue this worthwhile program.”

Another successful Drive partner is Rob Lake and his team of volunteers from Great Community Transport, who help women gain extra driving experience and their required hours.
