Dust off those dancing shoes, for it’s going to be a big night at the Wentworth Falls School of Arts on October 6.
As part of a breast cancer awareness campaign for LGBTIQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer) women, a fundraising dance for lesbians with cancer in the Blue Mountains will be held, with women encouraged to wear some pink.
Organised by Blue Mountains women and ACON – an organisation for LGBTI health promotion – the Abreast lesbian dance promises to be a fun night, with a serious message.
“Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer affecting women, with one in eight women diagnosed in Australia,” said ACON’s acting CEO Karen Price. “However, screening rates for LGBTIQ women are lower than they should be.”
“Through this event we want to raise awareness about what factors increase our risk of developing breast cancer, and encourage all LGBTIQ women, regardless of age, to prioritise their health.”
DJ Kate Monroe will get the dance floor moving from 7pm.
“The music will be broad enough to cater for everyone’s taste no matter what generation you’re from,” said Paula Anthony, from the organising committee. “We’re encouraging women to wear something pink as an acknowledgement that it is a fundraiser.”
There will be a photo booth to take fun boob pictures, and also a slideshow of images of women who’ve been affected by breast cancer.
Women can also book a free breast screen check on the night with BreastScreen NSW.
There will be security present. Tickets are $20 and can be bought online at: https://www.stickytickets.com.au/75271.
