Ross and Lorna Cameron from Sun Valley have grand plans next year to become part of a Guinness World Record.
The charter members of the Australian Motorhoming Lions Club (AMLC) are helping organise the AMLC’s Guinness World Record attempt on May 24-25 at Barcaldine in Central Queensland for the largest parade of camping vehicles moving in a row.
Vehicles are being asked to travel and stay at Barcaldine and then line-up on the Aramac Road. Another record attempt will be made to create a record of the longest connected image of LED rope lights.
The event will raise some money for charities in the region and assist with funding for drought affected farmers.
“If we can break the first record, we will certainly beat the second,” Mr Cameron said.
The attempt will be videoed from a helicopter, “in accordance with the strict auditing conditions by Guinness”. It’s the second Australian attempt after they ran “about 70 short in 2007”, he said.
This time group is almost halfway towards their target. At the end of September they had 345 recreational vehicles registered for the attempt.
“This national event will include motorhomes, caravans, fifth wheelers and we need to reach these RV communities,” Mrs Cameron said.
“We really do want people to see it as a bit of fun,” Mr Cameron added.
The pair is on the organising committee with seven other members from across Australia and regularly get together to discuss the attempt online. Two of the committee members were part of the original Australian attempt.
Currently the camping vehicle parade record is held by Italy with 672 vehicles. The 2019 target is for 1,000 vehicles.
The registration fee is only $20 and it costs $10 a night to camp at the site.
“We are hoping it will attract a wide audience both nationally and internationally, and will raise funds for charities in the drought-stricken Barcaldine Region of Central Queensland,” she said.
Those unable to get on the road can buy tickets to the raffle. The prize is a luxury resort-style weekend in Bowral during Tulip Time and is worth several thousand dollars. It will be drawn late next month. Only 150 tickets will be sold at $20 each. For tickets call Lorna Cameron on 0449 079742.
The Camerons have been motorhomers for 14 years and assist Lions clubs as they travel around the country. They have previously volunteers with the Lions club at the Gympie Music Muster and said now they travel “with a great sense of purpose”.
