Update: Because of the adverse weather forecast, the centenary celebration has been postponed until Sunday, November 11.
1st Blackheath Scouts is celebrating its 100th birthday with a family fun day on Sunday, October 21, 10am-2pm, at Blackheath Scout Hall (2 Park Lane).
With a giant water slide, ice-blocking (sliding down a hill on a solid block of ice), birthday cake and spit roast, games, craft and activities for ages 5-15, the day offers a fun way to find out about 21st century scouting.
“This is a great time for Blackheath Scouts to celebrate 100 years because our group is thriving,” said Emma Kennedy, scout leader. “We’ve had significant growth in membership over the last few years, thanks to a strong program of activities and lots of families wanting to join.”

Scouting began in Australia in 1908, with Blackheath Scouts established only 10 years later. In 1976, the first girls joined scouting.
“Looking back, we can see scouting has changed a lot in 100 years, moving with the times and adapting to stay in touch with community needs,” said Ms Kennedy.
“At the same time, the core scouting values, of adventure, self-discovery, self-reliance, team-work and challenge are as relevant as ever. We now have over 50 families, with young people aged between five and 16 active across the group, making us one of the biggest youth organisations in the Upper Mountains.”
The group offers activities ranging from science and technology, first aid, construction, camps, bike-riding and canoeing, through to multi-day expeditions.
