A love of riding BMX runs strongly in the Couzin family.
Nine-year-old Bryn recently won the hotly contested 9 year old boys six-round state series and dad, Nathan, aged 36, was second in the over 30s masters in the state series.
Bryn was also third in the state titles held in early October at Castle Hill, and he’s currently ranked third in the national series, with one round to go.
The duo, from Hazelbrook, are part of the Blue Mountains BMX Club and when they’re not on the track at Lawson, they’re kicking up the dirt on mountain bike trails around the Mountains.
“We’re at Lawson a lot and Hazelbrook dirt jumps and the Knapsack trails,” Nathan said.
Nathan enjoyed riding bikes in his childhood for fun, and only returned to the sport six years ago, when Bryn was old enough to start racing.
“When he was old enough, it was something we could do together,” Nathan said.
“I will ride with him as long as I can – until he thinks it’s not cool any more.”
An enthusiastic Bryn chimed in that he’d always think it was cool to ride with his dad.
Bryn is part of the Krank It team and is coached by Alex Cameron. He loves the social nature of the sport and gaining new skills.
“It’s good to make heaps of new friends. When I’m riding I use the skills from other riding, like mountain bike riding and park riding,” Bryn said.
Fellow Blue Mountains BMX Club member Eli Schroeder from Winmalee was third at the state titles in eight year old boys and won the state series. He’s currently second in the National Series with one race to go.
