Blue Mountains City Council is offering seven jobs as part of the organisation’s annual trainee program.
The positions – either apprenticeships, cadetships, or traineeships – will commence in January or February 2019.
General manager Rosemary Dillon said the program combined work with structured training and it was a great way for applicants to kick start their career.
“Successful applicants are given the opportunity to learn new skills,” said Ms Dillon. “They also gain a nationally recognised qualification and are mentored by long-standing council employees who are passionate about serving the local community.”
The 2019 traineeship program includes the following positions: apprentice electrician; apprentice mechanic; engineering cadetship; civil construction traineeship; civil construction traineeship (identified position for a member of the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community); horticulture traineeship; and a business services traineeship (identified position for a person living with disability).
“In these positions, successful applications will earn a weekly salary or wage, gain industry experience and boost their skills by having the opportunity to learn while working,” Ms Dillon said.
The positions are open to those who are in Year 10 and older.
Communications cadet Jacob Barton – who has worked at Blue Mountains City Council since January 2017 while completing a Bachelor of Communications Degree at the University of Western Sydney – said he has gained invaluable experience during his time at council.
“It’s been a great starting point for my career,” said Mr Barton. “As part of the cadetship I’ve had hands-on experience in a real work environment.
“There are some things you can’t learn at university and I’ve been lucky enough to have this chance to translate my academic skills into practical ones.”
