What could make Australia a more compassionate, less anxious society?
Find out when Hugh Mackay returns to Blaxland on Saturday, November 3.
The esteemed psychologist, social researcher and novelist returns to Blaxland for another stimulating community forum with the Lower Mountains Neighbourhood Centre.
Part of LMNC’s ‘Think BIG!’ Ideas Forum, this community forum will be held from 2-4pm at the Sharon Burridge Hall, Blaxland Community Centre (33 Hope Street, Blaxland).
Mackay will be speaking on his most recent book, Australia Reimagined. Subtitled ‘Towards a more compassionate, less anxious society’, the book argues that Australia’s unprecedented run of economic growth has failed to deliver a more stable or harmonious society. The book’s publishers comment that “Individualism is rampant. Income inequality is growing. Public education is under-resourced. The gender revolution is stalling. We no longer trust our major institutions or our political leaders. We are more socially fragmented, more anxious, more depressed, more overweight, more medicated, deeper in debt and increasingly addicted – whether to our digital devices, drugs, pornography or ‘stuff’.”
Nonetheless, the publishers note that “Hugh Mackay remains optimistic. Twenty-five years ago, he revolutionised Australian social analysis with the publication of Reinventing Australia. Now he takes another unflinching look at us and offers some compelling proposals for a more compassionate and socially cohesive Australia. You might not agree with everything he suggests, but you’ll find it hard to get some of his ideas out of your head.”
“We are thrilled to have Hugh Mackay return to Blaxland for LMNC for this important discussion on what we can do to make Australia a more compassionate and cohesive societ,” said LMNC manager, Peta Williams.
“We are interested in continuing to present a series of stimulating forums to the people of our community, and we are looking forward to another thoughtful and thought-provoking presentation from Hugh Mackay.”
Mackay is a psychologist, social researcher and novelist. He is the author of 19 books, including six bestsellers. In 2015, he was appointed an Officer in the Order of Australia. Australia Reimagined and other books will be on sale at the forum courtesy of The Turning Page Bookshop. Tickets are $10 and will include afternoon tea.
