Christmas spirit comes to Katoomba

The Christmas decorations in Katoomba Street and new path lighting in Carrington Place were launched on December 13 with musical performances by St Canice’s and Katoomba North Public Schools.

An enthusiastic audience of all ages joined in for choruses of Louie the Fly, I Like Aeroplane Jelly and the bush version of Jingle Bells.

Katoomba Chamber of Commerce and Community president Mark Jarvis said: ‘“It was a great note to finish the year on. The Chamber volunteers have been busy for a fortnight putting up decorations.

“Yesterday, council  hired a cherry picker so we could decorate the clock arch with garlands, lanterns and lights.

“And this week, the overhaul of Carrington Place lights was also completed. It has taken years to sort  but we are grateful for the persistence of council to get the job done properly so the lights don’t go out every time mist or rain comes through.”

The twilight launch finished just as a storm broke and the crowd fled along the well-lit paths in pouring rain.  Then lightning took out everything in Katoomba Street that wasn’t solar.
