Asbestos has been found in fill at the Springwood Country Club.
The material had been spread around the practice area of the golf course and along the ninth fairway but, after alarm bells were raised, had since been sprayed with a PVC solution, covered and fenced off.
Warning signs have been erected.
Club president, Claire Murray-Fulton, said it was unclear whether the asbestos was contained in fill acquired by the club from a reputable company, which assured them it was clean, or if it was secretly and illegally dumped.
In a note to members, Ms Murray-Fulton said the news had been “heartbreaking” for the board which “has put in so much work over the past few years to ensure the viability of the club”.
“We are now working very closely with the Western Sydney RID (Report Illegal Dumping) Squad and the Blue Mountains City Council to rectify this situation.
“If you or anyone you know has information about this material, or if you have seen vehicles entering the course at odd times, please let us know.”
Ms Murray-Fulton also assured members that there was no danger to them.
“Just ensure you keep out of the fenced sections and treat them as compulsory GUR [ground-under-repair].”
The land is owned by council but the club is responsible for all maintenance and repairs.
A council spokeswoman said council had not been aware of the fill as approval hadn’t been sought.
“Regardless, council’s staff have assisted the SCC in implementing the immediate ‘make safe’ works to isolate access to the contaminated material, installation of fencing etc as a gesture of support,” she said.
Ms Murray-Fulton said the club was doing all it could to establish what had happened and was complying with all requests of the relevant authorities.
“It’s just devastating for myself and the board. It’s the last thing we needed.”
