World renowned multi-instrumentalist, John Carty, at last returns to Australia and will perform at Plantbased Wholefoods in Katoomba.
Fiddle and banjo player Carty is one of Ireland’s finest traditional musicians. In 2003 he was awarded the coveted title of TG4 Traditional Musician of the Year, firmly establishing him among the elite in traditional music.
He has recorded extensively and performs both as a solo player, in duets and as part of John Carty’s Festival Band, At the Racket and Patrick Street. His latest album releases include Settle Out of Court with his daughter, Maggie, on banjo and vocals.
More recently he arranged the traditional music pieces in the highly acclaimed film Brooklyn.
Carty will be joined by his daughter Maggie. Now living in Melbourne, Maggie has toured the Australian festival scene and played support to Altan on their Australian tour.
She has been described as having found her second home on stage and has a natural stage talent. Traditional music is handed down from generation to generation and this father and daughter gig offers the audience an insight into a living and evolving tradition that spans at least four Carty generations.
On stage the duo have a natural ease with each other and their enjoyment and sense of fun is palpable. They play at Plantbased Wholefoods, 97 Katoomba Street on Thursday, March 14 from 7pm. Tickets at Plantbased Wholefoods pre-show $20 and $25 at the door. For inquiries, call John Paul Healy on 0404 615 071.
