The latest installation at Fairmont Resort in Leura is definitely not for the faint-hearted.
High Ropes Adventures at Fairmont Adventure Park reopened last month after a 10 year hiatus following a just under $100,000 investment of new cables, technology and a "black run".
The ropes course was brought back to life by Team Building Australia's Guy Moxley, 49, who first managed the course two decades ago and has redesigned it with more than 20 different activities now in place.
"The course was just finished when I came in '97. I started my career here. We ran it when Peppers had it and it really put the location on the map in terms of conference (activities). Then some other owners came along and they just neglected it. It's outdoors and exposed.
"I was sad to see it dilapidated and not used. If you've got it here you might as well have it operational."
Mr Moxley was a skier and mountaineer in Europe, then moved into running team building activities for corporate groups.
"Mountaineering was a lifestyle choice and great fun, I knew there wasn't any money in it … that's why we diversified into corporate training."
About 18 months ago Mr Moxley convinced owner Jerry Schwartz to re-open the activity. A full survey confirmed they only needed to replace the steel cables and bring in some other new technology.
"It was probably more expensive to take it [the old telegraph poles] down.
"Jerry's been great in turning this resort into a destination, a real family resort and it's great to be a part of it.
"And adventure stuff is really popular again … canyoning ... things like Ninja Warrior, people see it in the media and that has an impact."
The group has been testing the systems since October. It includes a course at five metres and a more challenging one at 10 metres. The climbing wall is 13 metres high.
A free "tiny tots" area with climbing swings for junior climbers will be developed next to the ropes course over the next few months. There are locals discounts and they are open for birthday parties.
Prices start at $30 for 10-17 year olds and $45 for adults and you book online at https://www.fairmontadventurepark.com.au/
