Celebrate sustainable living in the Blue Mountains and create your own scarecrow from recyclables for this year's Leura Harvest Festival.
The signature Birches of Leura Scarecrow Competition on Sunday, May 5 is open to schools, families and children, with entries to be exhibited at the Alexandra Hotel for a month following the festival.
Now in its sixth year, the festival has its greatest competition program designed to inspire community participation and unearth local talent.
Recreate grandma's secret recipe or present your own unique flavours at the Great Blue Mountains Jam Competition. Bygone Beautys Treasured Teapot Museum and Tearoom will treat the best homemade jam, marmalade, relish and chutney makers in the Mountains to traditional high tea and runners-up will be rewarded with a Devonshire tea indulgence.
The Pet Chook Show will again bring proud owners of friendly backyard fowls together for the honour of best chook in show. Prizes include vouchers for produce supplies and chook-themed prize packs for the best bantam, best pair or trio, and best standard.
The festival will again culminate in a cake procession down Leura Mall followed a free feast from the entries judged at Josophan's Great Australian Chocolate Cake Competition. Cake judging categories include best child, food industry student, professional, and adult novice baker.
Sponsored by The Escarpment Group, the Leura Harvest Festival features more than 70 stalls of organic produce and products, food prepared by local chefs, solar-powered vehicles, herbs and spices, apple ciders and local wines, to repurposed clothing, art, homewares, and organic beauty products.
