It's a family business in Springwood that's weathered the travails of time and where customers are transported into a little slice of European elegance.
Established in 1931, Nauthe's Jewellers offer expert repairs, pearl threading and manufacturing. The stunning store resides in a little Springwood laneway called Town House Plaza on Macquarie Road.
And now for only the second time in decades it's shutting down for a fortnight to future proof the business - new painting, an NBN upgrade, the cabinetry cleaned and restored and an all-important security upgrade. The precious lead lighting from the 1920s stays, but a new colour scheme (maroon or heritage green) is expected to replace the current blue.
The last day of their 30-50 per cent off renovation sale is tomorrow (Saturday May 25) with the shop expecting to close at 1pm.
"We closed the shop in 2009 to knock down the wall and join our two shops," co-owner Judy Nauthe said of the other period of time when they were not operating.
"Now we need to bring our technical stuff up to scratch, bring in updated security monitors and alarms; with the NBN the phone system will be redone, and we can do our restoration work on our cabinets and lead lighting."
There are bargains to be had in the store over the next 24 hours, as prices have dropped by up to 50 per cent to avoid all the jewellery going into the safe.
As an example, a 9ct Rutile quartz ring, made in the store, is now $800, down from $1600 and another item, an 18ct pearl and diamond pendant is also half the price - now $490, down from $980.
Jeweller Phill Nauthe works alongside his long-time friend and fellow qualified jeweller Grant Stephenson, wife Judy, many other staff members and their dogs Nelson, Billy and Little Dot, who are a popular feature behind the counter.
The business was started by Phill's European grandfather Chaz Nauthe in 1931 and was based in Sydney.
"It just came on to Phill after his Dad," Mrs Nauthe, who "married into the business" and manages the store, said.
Mrs Nauthe said the staff pride themselves on working with customers to create something unique and meaningful. The Nauthes have been in Springwood for more than 20 years after they shut down their Sydney workshop.
"We're an old fashioned jeweller, things are done in house [and] people like it because they can see it's done here and they are talking to the person who's working on the pieces and making things."
"We've done things for parents and now we find their children are coming to us for their engagements."
The store will be closed for a fortnight from May 25.
