Springwood swimmer Matt Wilson has blitzed selection trials for July's FINA World Championships in South Korea, winning both the 100m and 200m breaststroke and cementing his spot on the Australian team.
Wilson swam 59:78 in the 100m final in Brisbane on June 6, ahead of second placegetter Daniel Cave, 1:00:18.
"I was happy with the time in the 100 breaststroke on the first night with it only being .1 over my lifetime best. I was more-so happy to get first place and secure a spot on the team which really took a bit of pressure off the 200 later in the week," Wilson said.
Then he backed up on Thursday, June 13 to take the 200m win in 2:07:79, ahead of Zac Stubblety-Cook, 2:08:54 and Daniel Cave, 2:10:17.
"I was happy to win and get well under the qualifying for the 200 and cement my spot on the team," said the former Winmalee High School student.
"It's very exciting that I can still go a 2.07 without it being my best swim ever."
The 20-year-old set an Australian and Commonwealth record of 2:07:16 in April at the Australian Swimming Championships.
He's looking forward to his first-time visit to South Korea, taking on the likes of world record holder Ippei Watanabe from Japan and 2017 world champion Anton Chupkov from Russia in the 200m breaststroke.
"I'm extremely honoured and excited to have qualified for my second world championship team," Wilson said.
"Every time I put on that gold cap it means the world to me to be able to represent my country."
