Blackheath Mitre 10 began its life in the 1940s as a hardware store owned by Bill and Shirley Hume on the same site it stands today.
It is managed by their son Rob Hume.
The Hume family moved to the Blue Mountains from Scotland in the 1920s and opened a timber yard which is next door to Blackheath Mitre 10 and still going strong.
"Mum and Dad originally started a joinery business on the same site, then a few of Dad's suppliers asked if he would sell some of their stock as there was no retail outlet in the area," Mr Hume said.
"The hardware business grew so rapidly that Mum and Dad had to make a choice between Dad's joinery business or selling hardware."
The current retail shop was built in front of the joinery a few years later, followed by a warehouse. "We operate out of five sites in total," Mr Hume said.

He said changes in the market over the past few years - and the arrival of the big corporate stores in Katoomba - meant that as a small business there was no choice but to diversify.
Blackheath Mitre 10 is a full Stihl dealer and operates as a Stihl repair shop.
It also delivers Origin Gas and is the Return and Earn drop-off point for the area.
Mr Hume said he believed the store had remained successful due to its dedicated staff and loyal customers.
