UPDATE SATURDAY, 9AM:
Matt Wilson won a silver medal in the final of the 200m breaststroke late on Friday night.
At 2:06:68, he was a mere 100th of a second off his world record equalising time of 2:06:67 in the semi-finals on Thursday night.
Russian Anton Chupkov won gold, setting a new world record of 2:06:12, and Japan's Ippei Watanabe secured bronze in 2:06:73.
FRIDAY: Springwood swimmer Matt Wilson equalled the 200m breaststroke world record at the world championships on Thursday night.
The Commonwealth Games bronze medallist won his semi-final in 2:06.67.
The former Winmalee High School student, 20, clocked the impressive time after being part of Australia's 4x100m mixed medley gold medal win on Wednesday night.
"I was just trying to get my hand on the wall and get in the final," he told media after the race.
"Anything after that was a bonus. I mean a world record is a pretty big bonus."
Wilson's time equalled that set by Ippei Watanabe from Japan in 2017.
The 200m final will be held on Friday night and will include Watanabe and Russian Anton Chupkov, who was just .16 of a second behind Wilson in the semi-final.
Speaking to the Gazette before the FINA world championships, Wilson said he was looking forward to his first-time visit to South Korea, taking on the likes of Watanabe and Chupkov.
"Every time I put on that gold cap it means the world to me to be able to represent my country," Wilson said.
In April, Wilson set an Australian and Commonwealth record of 2:07:16 in the 200m breaststroke at the Australian Swimming Championships.
