Katoomba's retro Avalon restaurant was transformed with a New Orleans theme recently, when rich Cajun inspired dishes and the vibrant sounds of Frenchmen Street set the place buzzing.
It was all part of the new Art of Lunch program at the Avalon restaurant in Katoomba, held on the last Sunday of the month. The Avalon is one of several prominent Mountains eateries who have participated in the fusion of art, food and music.
Artist Peter 'Shoey' Shoemark presented his works at the event. He works with 'found or discarded art' and says of his 'HunqueJunque creation' that "no animal, person or belief could be considered sacred or beyond the scope of an aging welder gone feral".
"I rely on junk," he told the audience. "I hope you find as much fun in them as I did creating them."
Celebrating the birthplace of jazz were Jason Thornton (on saxophone) and Ray Alldridge of Galapagos Duck fame on keys. Thorton has recently returned from New Orleans and had plenty of stories to share.
The Avalon's culinary team is led by David Cartwright. The Art of Lunch is a showcase for the talents of Blue Mountains artists, musicians and chefs.
