A man has pleaded not guilty to murdering a mother of two at a shopping centre in Adelaide's south but will be assessed to consider if he was mentally incompetent at the time.
Jayden Tanee Lowah faced the Supreme Court on Monday in relation to the murder of Michelle Foster at the Colonnades Shopping Centre in October last year.
The court ordered the 20-year-old be examined to determine if he was mentally competent at the time of the offence and if he is mentally fit to stand trial.
Ms Foster, 36, died at the scene from serious head injuries despite paramedics and police providing first aid.
Lowah was arrested at the same location.
At the time of his arrest, police said there was no known link between the suspect and the victim.
Prosecutor Carmen Matteo told the court on Monday that many hours of recorded interviews had been recorded with Lowah and those would be provided to the psychiatrists appointed to consider his mental health.
Lowah will remain in custody and return to court in January.
Outside the court, the victim's mother, Andrea Foster, said her family was heartbroken by the death of her daughter.
"My grandchildren have no mother, I have no daughter, my son has no sister," she said.
Ms Foster said the drawn-out court process was also taking a toll but she was hopeful it would "get the right outcome".
"We're going to let the court system do what they have to do and get it right," she said.
"There's nothing else that we can do."
