Academy Singers, conducted by Paul Terracini, is presenting a magnificent program of part songs by Franz Schubert. Choral enthusiasts have a choice of two venues; the first concert is at St Finbar's Church, Glenbrook, on Sunday, September 22, at 3pm or, for Sydneysiders, there is a second concert a week later at 2.30pm on Sunday, September 29, at St Columba's Church in Ocean St, Woollahra.
The concert's title, Schubertiade, refers to an event held to celebrate the music of Schubert. During his lifetime, these events were generally informal, unadvertised gatherings, held at private homes. Modern Schubertiades are more likely to be presented as concerts, though hopefully keeping the original convivial atmosphere.
The choral works in the two concerts include one of Schubert's most magical pieces, Gesang der Geister ber den Wassern (Song of the Spirits over the Waters) as well as the heart-warming a cappella Chor der Engel (Choir of Angels) taken from Goethe's Faust.
Academy Singers are proud to present these September concerts in conjunction with the Sydney Schubert Society. Since its foundation, the society has presented more than 300 Schubertiades (this concert is number 385) with the intention of reviving the spirit of the gatherings of Schubert's friends. Each Schubertiade is introduced with reference to the cultural and musical importance of the program to Schubert and his work by the president of the society and curator of its programs.
Tickets are $25 adults, $20 concession, and $5 children, available at the door, or book at www.academysingers.com.au
