Two 12-year-old boys have been cautioned for lighting a campfire by their cubby at Wentworth Falls lake on September 4, which got out of control, burning a hectare of bushland.
Firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSW and the RFS were called to the north-western side of Wentworth Falls lake, between Pine Avenue and Boronia Road, after a report of a bushfire about 4pm on Wednesday.
"Initial information at the scene was that two juveniles were seen running from the location at the time the fire was first discovered," said Blue Mountains Police Detective Inspector Scott McAlpine.
Firefighters took about two hours to extinguish the blaze, which had burnt a hectare of bushland, but not impacted homes.
At 7.30pm the two boys from Wentworth Falls and their fathers attended Katoomba Police Station, telling police they had been playing in a cubby house in bushland when they decided to light a campfire.
"Due to the extremely dry conditions and strong winds, the fire quickly got away from them and ignited bushland. The young persons then attempted to extinguish the flames without success after which they ran home and alerted their parents who contacted emergency services," Det Insp McAlpine said.
The duo were given a youth caution for their actions.
