Five new plays by local playwrights will be premiered by Blackheath Theatre Company in its New Voices season starting on October 3 at the Blackheath Area Community Centre (BANC).
Raining on my Parade is by Lucy Twomey, who has a background in magazine, newspaper and television journalism.
Said Twomey: "I have spent a lot of time with a great range of personalities. Some have been wonderful characters and some, shall we say, have had larger than life egos... A mix of those experiences have found their way into Raining on My Parade."
David Levell has written A Bush Haunting. Classic ghost stories had a major influence on Levell's reading tastes in his growing years. His bookshelf also held volumes about the history of convict life in Australia's growing years.
"A Bush Haunting is a supernatural tale, set it in a lonely bush hut in Australia's convict past," said Levell. "There's a dark and stormy night, and plot twists. Our convict era still echoes with the gothic and the strange. My play taps into that."
Burning Goat is by Dale Turner, who has mixed a professional life of property law and conveyancing with a passion for playwriting. Turner has had his plays performed at venues such as Parramatta Riverside and the Q Theatre.
Burning Goat is part of a trilogy of one act plays exploring three-way relationships between men and women.
Where There's Smoke is by Lisa Unger.
After graduating from Q Theatre's intensive acting course, Unger appeared on Home and Away. Her first novel, Life on Planet France, was written while working in France for the UN.
Said Unger: "Where There's Smoke was prompted by discovering the use of a natural disaster to commit murder is the perfect cover-up. I combined that realisation with my own interest in exploring the complexities of relationships within marriage and family. "
J C Morgan's play, A Fat lot of Good, is a dramatic monologue. He wrote it while at uni as a mature-age student.
The shows are on October 3, 4 and 5 at 7.30pm and October 5 and 6 at 2pm. Tickets available at blackheaththeatrecompany.com or from Richardson & Wrench, 28 Govetts Leap Rd, Blackheath.
