Science of the Local returns for its final event of the year on Sunday November 24, with talks on genes and trauma as well as quantum physics from 2.30pm at Springwood Sports Club. Admission is free.
Dr Yann Quide will be speaking about his work investigating the neuro and biological markers of childhood trauma. Quide is an early-career postdoctoral researcher at UNSW's School of Psychiatry and an affiliated scientist at Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA). He did his PhD at the University of Tours, France.
Also speaking will be ARC Future Fellow and Senior Lecturer at UTS, Dr Peter Rohde. Rohde's talk is titled "Why quantum physics is science, not witchcraft". As part of the team at the UTS Centre for Quantum Software and Information, Rohde is helping develop the software and information processing infrastructure for future quantum technologies.
"We would love to see another big crowd on Sunday," said co-founder of Science at the Local Kevin Joseph. "2019 has been huge for us, with our first ever events in Lithgow and our hosting of the NSW launch of Science Week. A special thanks to all our speakers, supporters and sponsors."
"We're already thinking about our 2020 program," said fellow co-founder Hamish Clarke. "We're hoping to run a special event on bushfire research - always topical in the Blue Mountains, but especially so given the intense fire activity we've seen so far this season - and we've had heaps of great suggestions from the community for speakers and topics."
The 2020 program will be announced shortly. Community members can sign up for email updates at www.facebook.com/ScienceAtTheLocal.
The initiative is supported by Inspiring Australia and the NSW Government.
