Unpredictable weather and outstanding rugby were the order of the day at the fourth instalment of the Active Axons Blue Mountains and Greater West Rugby Sevens Carnival on Saturday at Blue Mountains Grammar School.
Eighteen men's teams and five women's teams turned out in the tournament amidst thick fog, brilliant sunshine and thunderstorms.
Another nail-biting final in the men's division finished in favour of the Millthorpe Mountain Goats for the second year running. They defeated The Lakes, an invitational team from the Central Coast with a Fijian flavour, 19-14 in the dying stages courtesy of a late try to Billy Veitch.
But the incredible victory was set up on the stroke of half-time when the Lakes looked destined to skip to a 21-7 half-time lead. However, an exceptional cover tackle and turnover from Tom Farnell saw Millthorpe go 100 metres and score at the other end through Farnell's brother, Connor.
The Rebelettes Development won the women's division, defeating the highly fancied Central Coast Academy 33-5 in the final despite having lost to them in the pool stages. Rebelettes' star and Faulconbridge local, Clare Belfanti, won Player of the Tournament after an exceptional day's play.
There were plenty of star's on show across the day, with 2019 NRL player's Tyrell Fuimaono and Zane Musgrove showing their wares, alongside NSW Waratah's women's player Shenay Ball of Central Coast.
The day was well attended, with estimated attendance figures of 1200.
