Blue Mountains mayor Mark Greenhill took to the streets recently to sell copies of the Big Issue and highlight the plight of homeless people in our community.
This support from local government leaders helps challenge stereotypes about the magazine and shows that vendors are working hard to make positive changes in their lives and the community.
The mayor, and Councillor Romola Hollywood, spent time with local Big Issue vendor Trevor at the Civic Centre in Katoomba. Proceeds from Cr Greenhill's sales will go to the local Big Issue office to support vendor activities.
"I am proud to support the Big Issue once again by selling copies of this special anniversary issue," said Cr Greenhill.
"If you see a Big Issue seller in your local community, I encourage you to buy a copy. It's a great magazine and buying a copy helps the seller directly by putting money in their pockets.
"It also helps to raises awareness of the important issue of homelessness in our local community."
The Big Issue, best known for the iconic magazine, provides work opportunities to people who are have a hard time for many different reasons.
The concept is simple: street vendors buy the magazine for $4.50 and sell it on streets around Australia for $9, helping them to earn a meaningful income.
