Bushfires in the Blue Mountains are being controlled and firefighters are hopeful conditions will continue to ease with the cooler weather continuing this week and rain forecast for Thursday and Friday (January 16-17).
Rural Fire Service spokesman Anthony Bradstreet said last week's "challenge" fire day on Friday and into Saturday morning - when the Erskine Creek fire went to watch and act - "thankfully did not eventuate".
"For the rest of this week we are likely to see conditions ease, hopefully aiming for some reasonable rain on Thursday and Friday and thunderstorms. We're quietly hopeful".
Last week the RFS planned a 50 km trail backburn. About 10 kms was completed before the strategy changed with cooler weather. A "close containment strategy" meant instead they started directly attacking the edges of the Erskine Creek fire. Residents are still advised to call the Bushfire Information Line (1800 679 737) or Triple O if they see fire/smoke and have concerns.
