The Blue Mountains based Kanimbla Quartet kicks off their 2020 series of concerts with a program of colours and textures featuring Catherine Weaver on Baroque recorder.
The concert will take place at the Blackheath Uniting Church on Sunday, March 1 at 2pm.
The Kanimbla Quartet comprises Rebecca Daniel, Elizabeth Cooney, Sam Harding and Trish McMeekin, all residents of the Mountains. They formed the quartet after performing in Mt Victoria composer Rowen Fox's opera Chang' E and the Moon in 2016.
The group is dedicated to presenting programs to local audiences, and are particularly interested in exploring music by local composers as well as other more classical works.
This program includes a new work by Rowen Fox, Little concerto for recorder and string quartet and two compositions by Rebecca Daniel which were included in the CD the Lightness of Dark made last year by Daniel and Fiona Joy Hawkins and featuring the Kanimbla Quartet.
Also included in the program will be a piece by Baroque composer Telemann for recorder and strings as well as two works by Elena Kats-Chernin - Inventions for recorder and strings, originally composed for Genevieve Lacey and the Flinders Quartet, and Blue Silence for string quartet.
Our featured guest for this concert, Catherine Weaver, is a specialist in the performance of early music, and has performed with many ensembles in Sydney, the Mountains and the Southern Highlands. She has also performed with Musica Viva in regional areas, and has recorded for ABC Classic FM and 2MBS-FM.
Having returned to the Mountains in 2016, Weaver is a valued member of the Mountains musical community, singing in both the Phoenix Choir and the Byrd Consort, and playing recorder in the Blue Mountains Recorder Collective.
The quartet also performs with the Academy Singers and the Phoenix Choir, and will be part of the Academy Singers Palm Sunday program at St Hilda's Church in Katoomba on April 5.
Tickets $30/students $15, including afternoon tea, for the March 1 concert are available on the door on the day, or at trybooking.com.
