Women working in the emergency services locally, will share their experiences at an International Women's Day celebration.
Organised by the Zonta Club of the Blue Mountains, the event at the Grandview Hotel in Wentworth Falls on March 2, will feature speakers from the Rural Fire Service, State Emergency Service and National Parks and Wildlife Service.
Wendy Hemmons joined the Blaxland brigade of the RFS two years ago. The teacher with more than 25 years' experience, wife and mother of two, was deployed to northern NSW this fire season, and has been working hard on fire-fighting campaigns locally.
Gay Thornton is the Deputy Unit Commander for the Blue Mountains SES, and has been a member for 29 years, holding several senior roles in field and operations. She worked in mental health for 40 years, holding various positions in education and management.
Michaela Jones from NPWS is the senior project officer for threatened species, helping facilitate access into recently burnt areas in the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area to establish post-fire wildlife support projects. She has worked in a range of fire-fighting roles, ranging from crew member to planning and operations roles in incident management teams.
Other confirmed speakers include Caroline Grice from RFS Medlow Bath and Caro Ryan from the SES.
