Normal train services between the Blue Mountains and the city are due to resume on Monday, March 2 after a landslip at Leura closed the line earlier this month.
In a massive effort, Sydney Trains crews worked almost around the clock to repair the track, which was left hanging in thin air after the soil beneath it washed away after torrential rain from February 7-10.
The slip also damaged one of the stanchions which hold up the overhead wires.
Buses have replaced trains for commuters from Springwood to the city since the slip. Freight trains have had to be diverted or goods trucked by road.
More than 50 passenger carriages were stranded on the western side of the landslip, meaning Sydney Trains had to run more four-carriage services.
But as of Tuesday (February 25), the repairs had progressed enough for a limited number of freight and coal services to resume operating. The Indian Pacific was also able to use the track yesterday (Wednesday).
Repairs to the overhead power supply to allow Mountains passenger services to resume are expected to be completed this week.
The normal electric passenger trains between Mt Victoria and Sydney will return on Monday, March 2, with trains expected to be operating to the daily working timetable by that afternoon.
Buses will continue to operate between Mt Victoria and Lithgow due to works on the line to repair damage from bushfires.
Regional services including Dubbo XPT, Broken Hill XPLORER and Bathurst Bullet will run to the altered timetable that was in place before the closure of the line at Leura. Some services may be periodically replaced by coaches.
