Blue Mountains residents will have the opportunity to hear and ask questions about the 'Uluru Statement from the Heart' with Thomas Mayor on June 1.
Thomas Mayor is a Torres Strait Islander man who was a participant in the process endorsing the Uluru Statement from the Heart in 2017. The Uluru gathering included 250 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people representing communities across the nation.
After the statement was dismissed by the Prime Minister, Thomas travelled the country with the Uluru Statement canvas teaching people about the importance of the proposals for Voice, Treaty and Truth. He has been to capital cities, small towns and remote Aboriginal communities. With other Indigenous activists, Mr Mayor started a people's movement.
In 2018 he realised he had a compelling story to tell. His book, Finding the Heart of the Nation, was described by Professor Marcia Langton as "full of spirit. The spirit of struggle. The spirit of survival. The spirit to make change for a better Australia".
On June 1 at 12noon, Mr Mayor will host a Zoom meeting. For details about joining email Lyn Bevington at bridgew20@gmail.com before May 29. For more information call 0432 352 850.
