The Zonta Club of the Blue Mountains have been making breast care cushions to support local women who have undergone breast cancer surgery.
"The cushions aid breast cancer surgery recovery by allowing a patient to sit, sleep and rest comfortably, as well as by preventing pain from bumps while walking around and any discomfort from wearing seat belts," said club president Helen Grimson.
"The U-shaped satin cushions, complete with a strap, are worn like a handbag to protect the chest and armpit."
The cushions will be distributed to patients in local hospitals including Blue Mountains District Anzac Memorial, Nepean Public and Nepean Private, Lithgow, and Hawkesbury hospitals via the McGrath breast care nurse who supports these hospitals.
"Breast cancer predominantly impacts women, however we do also make our cushions available to men," Ms Grimson said.
Anyone who hasn't received a cushion in hospital after breast surgery can contact the Zonta club at bluemountains@zontadistrict24.org and they will be happy to get one to you.
The club is also grateful to the Katoomba and Upper Blue Mountains Community Bank branch of the Bendigo Bank for their $500 sponsorship of the project this year.
Blue Mountains Zonta is listed as a donation charity at the Return and Earn recycling machine at Wentworth Falls Country Club until August 23. Returning and donating 50 drink containers will pay for a Zonta breast care cushion and will help the club sustain this project.
