Whether Hawkesbury Lookout should be better lit at night has come into question after a 22-year-old driver and several others were fined for parking there at 10.15pm.
Janelle Smith says her son was unaware parking was not allowed between 10pm and 6am, as the signs were not illuminated.
"You can't expect a driver's headlights to see the sign. The onus is on council to show the sign. I don't know how it got past the Local Traffic Committee and got through the issue of lighting," she said.
While the lookout is managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service, the carpark is managed by Blue Mountains City Council.
'No Parking' signs were installed two years ago.
"We previously had issues with cars driving erratically in the area, however as a result police have increased taskings and have liaised with council in having 'No Parking' signs installed to stop members of the public congregating at night," said Blue Mountains Police Detective Inspector Scott McAlpine.
Hawkesbury Heights residents say it's noisy around the lookout at night as it's a popular place for people to meet.
"It's so noisy at night with people using it as a drag strip and smoke runs," said Rosita Micallef.
Michelle Van der Meer said lights would deter visitors after dark.
"It's disgusting what has happened to the lookout. We need lights as this will deter the hoons. I wish people would also take their rubbish with them and stop putting their cigarettes out on the ground," she said.
But Dan Dunn thought lights would make little difference.
"I would like to see maybe a roundabout at the intersection of Hawkesbury and Booker roads. This would affect the overall speed of vehicles on the descent and also provide the locals with a safer way to enter and exit Hawkesbury Road."
Comment has been sought from Blue Mountains City Council regarding illumination of the 'No Parking' signs.
