The Blue Mountains Kangaroos will kick-off next season in new kit thanks to a $3000 grant.
The grant will provide under 12s players with new jerseys next season, ensuring players of all ages are wearing the same kit.
Under 12s coach and parent Michael Harrison applied for the grant through the St George Footy Grants program.
The grant will also go towards an electronic scoreboard and new playing equipment.
It couldn't have come at a better time.
"With COVID this year we are losing a bit of money each week. We can't do normal things like canteen," said Blue Mountains Kangaroos president Danny Croucher.
The money made by the canteen would usually offset the cost of hiring umpires and someone to administer first aid on game days.
"This year without the canteen, $500 to $700 a round at home we are losing," Mr Croucher said.
While the club is playing a reduced season and has introduced COVID-safe protocols, Mr Croucher says its managing the rules around just one spectator per player at games that is the most difficult.
"The biggest challenge is having to restrict the number of people who can watch," Mr Croucher said.
"It's a big thing that we miss having parents, brothers and sisters and grandparents at games. For any game you might get 50 to 60 people from various families watching a game. You might have 10 now. The community side of things has dropped off."
But an unexpected upshot of the pandemic, seems to be a reduction in competitiveness.
"Rather than win at all costs, the kids are more happy to just be playing sport. It's relaxed and friendly," Mr Croucher said.
