A $500,00 upgrade to St Johns Park in Blaxland is one step closer after the federal government and council finalised a funding agreement for the project.
The funds, promised during the 2019 federal election, will provide new equipment and improvements that make the space inclusive for users of all abilities.
Current play equipment will be retained in the upgrade, while the proposed changes will include a new accessible toilet, a sensory walk including features that focus on touch and motor skills, picnic and seating areas, accessible parking spaces, and new equipment suitable for all levels of ability.
"It's fantastic to receive this grant," said Blue Mountains mayor Mark Greenhill. "St Johns Park provides a play space for so many users. This kind of funding can take us into a future where parks are for everyone - something that we are moving towards throughout the Mountains."
Liberal Senator Marise Payne said the park's transformation would ensure all children can play together in a fun and accessible environment, regardless of ability.
"Creating an inclusive playground is about designing a playground that can be enjoyed by all," she said.
"It's also about making sure that parents, guardians and carers are confident that their local park is safe, accommodating and practicable.
"Locking in this funding follows on from the community consultation that Blue Mountains City Council have undertaken regarding the design of the playground."
During a previous community consultation session, about 100 attendees visited in person while others gave feedback online via council's website.
Another round of consultation is planned before the construction commences.

Federal Member for Macquarie, Susan Templeman, also welcomed the investment in the new inclusive playground.
"I worked with the community on a huge inclusive playground campaign 18 months ago, with mums like Jane Renneberg-Bles, to see more funding for inclusive playgrounds locally. This is a win for parents like Jane and their families," she said.
Andrew Daley, CEO of Dare Disability, said making the Blue Mountains more inclusive must be a priority.
"Seeing this funding flow into the community is a great outcome, because after all, everyone should be able to enjoy open spaces equally," he said.
"We know from our own experiences at DARE that locals want and expect facilities and services to be inclusive and welcoming, so I want to commend Senator Payne for delivering this funding on what is a really worthwhile project."
President of Blaxland Football Club, Steve Myhill, said the club was excited about the funding announcement.
"We see this is a terrific win for the local community because it will put a focus on getting outdoors, regardless of ability," said Mr Myhill.
The upgrade to St Johns Park is scheduled to be completed by June 30, 2022.
