Alex Prestney remembers working just one shift with his police officer brother Josh, a rookie in the force.
"We both had a great day," the Victorian officer said.
Twenty-eight-year-old Josh had been on the beat for only a few months when he and three fellow officers were killed on duty by a truck on a Melbourne freeway in April.
Ahead of National Police Remembrance Day on Tuesday, family and friends of the four have shared new photos and memories.
Leading Senior Constable Lynette Taylor, Senior Constable Kevin King and Constable Glen Humphris along with Const Prestney, all died at Kew on 22 April when speaking to a driver on the side of the freeway.
"I felt so proud the first time I saw him in his uniform," Alex said of his brother Josh, who followed him into the force.
"He wore it with such pride. We were brothers, but when he joined Victoria Police, we were another part of another family too and that was really special for us.
"Josh and I were lucky to work one shift together. It was a regular shift but we both had a great day.
"While we only got to do this once, I am still grateful we got the opportunity to have that experience together."
Josh's dad Andrew recalled the two of them competing in ironman events across Australia.
Police Remembrance Day pays tributes to all officers killed on duty and to others with links to the force who have died in the past year.
In addition to the four officers killed in April, 19 Victoria Police officers, public service staff and police chaplains died in the past year.
A wreath-laying service will be held on Tuesday, streamed live online due to COVID-19 restrictions.
