Regional Victorians should protect themselves against mosquitoes, after the Ross River virus was detected in far north west Victoria.
Health authorities have issued the advisory warning for anyone living in, or travelling to north west Victoria.
Authorities also advise wearing long, loose fitting clothing outside and making sure accommodation is properly fitted with mosquito nets or screens.
The warning comes after Ross River virus was detected in mosquitoes in urban Mildura.
The virus can cause symptoms such as joint pain and stiffness, headache, fever, rash, fatigue.
Recent weather and water conditions in the Mildura region have been favourable to mosquito biting and breeding.
All parts of Victoria have mosquitoes which can carry the Ross River virus, but the risk is greatest in rural and regional Victoria.
The Department of Health and Human Services has urged doctors to consider the possibility of mosquito born illness in patients presenting with compatible illness, especially after travel to rural or regional Victoria.
