Uncle Chris Tobin will be making the most of the public holiday on January 26, but he won't be celebrating.
The Darug man said to be inclusive, he believed Australia Day should be celebrated on another date. He doesn't mind which one, but not January 26.
"We want it to be be on a date where our sovereignty wasn't taken by the British," he said. "The date is an issue for a lot of us."
Uncle Chris did recognise however, that every person had a different perspective on the issue. "Some people are celebrating a vision of Australia yet to be realised" while others, want to "show their inclusion in Australia," he said. "I can also understand people sitting it out until it's a different date."
The proliferation of people concurrently waving Aboriginal and Australian flags on January 26, suggested to him that "most Australians want a peaceful co-existence with Aboriginal Australia. So why not change the date?"
