A former Blue Mountains man has helped flood stranded NSW North Coast residents after baking extra loaves of bread and delivering them in his wetsuit and from a tinny.
All it took was a quick phone call from Tim Walker at the Hastings Co-op to send Albert Vos and his employees at Al's Bakehouse into overdrive.
The result was an extra couple of hundred loaves of bread that were then floated across the Old King Creek Road bridge on a tinny and into the homes of hundreds of stranded residents.
"People couldn't get into town, so that was our bit to do. That's what it's all about," Mr Vos said.
"We received a phone call from Tim who wanted us to help out with bread so I said no worries, we pulled our fingers out and baked an extra 200 loaves in about four hours.
"I went down in the van where the fire brigade met us, then we unloaded it onto the boat and watched them pull it across."
"They probably did three or four trips."
Mr Vos and wife Deborah took over the bakehouse and opened up in May last year amidst a pandemic with no government assistance.
At the time they had a team of three which has now grown to 11.
"I'm originally from the Blue Mountains but had family up here and always wanted to move to the North Coast," Mr Vos said.
"The community spirit here is great."
