A Sydney man is accused of driving at and threatening to set his dog onto an off-duty police officer who was intervening in a road-rage incident.
Police said the incident unfolded about 5.30pm on Tuesday when a woman was driving along Richardson Crescent, Tempe and heard a car horn being repeatedly honked.
She said an SUV then aggressively overtook her station wagon, allegedly travelling on the wrong side of the road for some distance.
The SUV then stopped at an intersection, blocking the woman's path before the driver got out and allegedly verbally abused her.
An off-duty police officer, who witnessed the incident, identified himself and tried to speak with the man.
The driver then allegedly threatened to set a large dog - which was sitting in the front passenger seat - onto the officer.
Police said the man then returned to his car and drove through a red light before reversing twice in the direction of the officer, who had taken evasive action.
The man then drove off but was later arrested at an apartment in nearby Marrickville.
The 51-year-old is facing multiple charges. He was refused bail and will appear on Wednesday in Newtown Local Court.
