NAIDOC Week celebrations looked very different this year in lockdown for the Wagana Aboriginal Dancers. There were no community gatherings, no art exhibitions and no live performances.
So Wagana went online with a series of creative endeavors to keep them connected and moving. A highlight of their week was the creation of a beautiful video inspired by this years NAIDOC theme 'Heal Country' which can be viewed on their social media sites.
The Wagana collective, led by Wiradjuri woman Jo Clancy brings together up to 60 Aboriginal women and girls every week to dance on Dharug and Gundungurra Country.
The group performs at festivals and events, in schools and before the COVID-19 pandemic they often traveled overseas to share their dance, songs and stories. They have an ongoing partnership with the Raven Spirit Dancers from Vancouver and will begin a new creative development with Raven Spirit online next month for Dance and the Child International 2022.
