The Blue Mountains Health Trust is providing scholarships of $10,000 (paid over three years) to final year school students going on to study health related courses.

To date more than 40 scholarships have been awarded for courses that include nursing, occupational health, medicine, dietetics, physiotherapy, paramedical services and medical science.

There are two special scholarships available. One is in honour of the late Dr Kevin Kennedy and is awarded to a student beginning a medical degree. The second is provided by the Leura Garden Festival committee.

The Blue Mountains Health Trust was established in 2002 to promote the health and wellbeing of those who live in the Blue Mountains Local Government Area.

The Trust has three purposes. Firstly, it helps people who have an illness or disability and who have needs which are not covered by existing government funding. Secondly, it provides for medical research.

To date, funds have also been provided to many individual families for a range of diverse needs such as specialised wheelchairs and occupational therapy for children with severe disabilities, insulin pump for a brittle diabetic, therapy for children with speech difficulties and a laptop computer for a young disabled student.

Scholarship recipient Gabrielle said receiving the Blue Mountains Health Trust Scholarship was an honour for which she would always be grateful.

"The scholarship assisted me in being able to afford to live out of home and enabled me to afford compulsory items such as my stethoscope, university textbooks and uniforms.

"Since completing my degree in a Bachelor of Paramedicine at the start of the year I'm now working full time as a paramedic for a private ambulance company in the Greater Sydney district and looking to start with NSW Ambulance next year."

Blue Mountains residents completing year 12 this year can apply for a 2022 Scholarship by downloading the application form that can be found on the Blue Mountains Health Trust website at bluemountainshealthtrust.com.au. You then need to post the completed form to PO Box 7097 Leura NSW 2780 by November 13, 2021.
