Each year, six fellowships are awarded to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander writers from anywhere in Australia. An illustrious cohort of previous recipients includes writers at different stages of their creative life, including Adam Thompson, Alison Whittaker, Gary Lonesborough, Jazz Money, Jeanine Leane and Lisa Fuller, all of whom have been recently published to critical acclaim.

Now in its fifth year, the Fellowship includes a one-week, all-inclusive residency at the National Writers' House. Fellowship recipients will each have their own writing studio and accommodation at Varuna, and the uninterrupted time and space to write. All recipients will be offered optional mentoring and opportunities to connect with other writers, and the invitation to have their work appraised for publication with Magabala Books.

Varuna Creative Director Amy Sambrooke said: "Over five years, our First Nations Fellowship program has developed into one of the most recognised opportunities for First Nations writers in Australia. Varuna is proud to play a part in the development and support of six First Nations writers each year through this program, whether they are writing their first book or their fifteenth."

Applications for the First Nations Fellowship are open to writers of all genres of fiction, narrative non-fiction, poetry, children's books, graphic novels, dramatic/screen writing, writing for radio, translation, young adult, essays or short fiction. Submissions in language are welcomed.

Varuna acknowledges the support of The Copyright Agency Cultural Fund, and thanks First Nations Fellowships program consultant, Dr Peter Minter, Senior Lecturer in the Department of English at the University of Sydney.

Applications for the 2022 program close December 15, 2021. The residency week will take place from August 1-8, 2022. There is no application fee for this program, nor for the residency itself.
