After much consultation and some local resistance, the plan of management and master plan for Buttenshaw Park in Springwood has been approved, clearing the way for the construction of a new youth-focused play space.
Some residents adjoining the park had expressed reservations after seeing initial designs for the play area.
Facilities and equipment planned for the $500,000 upgrade include a BMX 'pump' track, a 25-metre double flying fox, a bouldering wall and climbing net, a giant group swing, table tennis table and a dancing snake.
Residents raised concerns about traffic, parking and lighting issues. Some were worried at the proximity of the play area to their properties.
But of the more than 200 people who were asked if they liked the final design, 146 said yes, 48 were neutral and 30 were not happy.
At this week's council meeting, Cr Daniel Myles introduced an amendment which added two provisos to the management plan.
The first was that any events and activities would be limited to 250 people at any one time; the second said that outdoor small scale group activities or uses, private, commercial or community, such as yoga and fitness classes or weddings, would be permitted but must be without amplification or other noise generation.
Cr Shae Foenander said she would have to vote against the plan because the play area is too close to some neighbouring homes.
"That park has got such a large open space - why are we putting up play equipment right up against the fences?"
The plan was passed 10-2, with Cr Brown also opposing.
