The National Parks and Wildlife Service is planning an upgrade of facilities and Evans Lookout in Blackheath, starting point for one of the Mountains most popular bushwalks, the Grand Canyon.
The plan will include:
- Redesign and resurface of the carpark to maximise spaces and provide for minibus parking and turn around;
- improve lookout safety with new handrails;
- construct accessible parking and pathways for wheelchair access to amenities and lookout;
- replace existing toilet with new accessible facilities; and
- realign tracks and rehabilitate obsolete tracks.
Information sessions will be held on Sunday, November 7 at the Blue Mountains Heritage Centre at the end of Govetts Leap Road. The free sessions will be at noon and 1pm. Bookings are essential with a maximum off 22 people allowed in each time slot. People must be fully vaccinated, check in and wear a mask.

Meanwhile, the technical design for an upgrade at Govetts Leap has been finalised, following a community information day in May.
The overall landscape design plan has not changed, however it has been amended by reducing the area of turf on the viewing mound which will have a combination of native planting and turf, and retaining two of the existing trees between the carpark and the lookout edge.
