Blackheath Cricket Club has reason to be proud after five of its junior cricketers were named in Penrith Junior Cricket Association teams.
Oliver Freeman, 16, and Tom Seldon, 15, both made the Watson Shield squad for under-17s. Alton Freeman and Henry Laurie, both 12, made the Gee Shield squad for under-13s, and Charlie Monks, also 12, made the Creak Shield squad for under-13s.
Selection for these junior squads is hotly contested by junior cricketers across the Nepean and Blue Mountains districts. All five young Blackheath cricketers participated in trials to gain selection in their respective squads.
The players will now compete against other representative teams from all junior cricket associations throughout Sydney in the Watson, Gee and Creak Shields. The competitions are regarded as the junior version of Sydney grade cricket.
Blackheath CC secretary Mark McGrath was full of praise for the junior players.
"Last season all five of these boys played in our senior B side with their fathers and won the Blue Mountains Cricket Association 2nd Grade Premiership," said Mr McGrath.
"They all showed a lot of talent and character in competing against older players under pressure, and have been rewarded for all their hard work in the nets over the last few years."
