A Blue Mountains golfer is set for a very long day out on the fairways and greens, all in the name of raising funds for the Cancer Council.
Ben Cameron of Faulconbridge is taking part in The Longest Day, a challenge to complete four rounds of golf in one day - a total of 72 holes. Mr Cameron will be taking on the gruelling task at Blackheath Golf Club on, naturally, the year's longest day: December 13. And he is on the lookout for others to join him.
"Our son Blake and I did it together last time," said Mr Cameron. "It was tough as we had to cope with the smoke generated from bushfires back in 2019. Despite the challenging conditions and the fact we chose to carry our bags all day, we had a really memorable time sharing the 72-hole adventure.
"Unfortunately, it looks like my son can't make it this year, so I'm hoping others will join my team, the Blackheathens, and raise some money for a great cause."
All funds raised go towards the Cancer Council's research, support services, prevention programs and advocacy campaigns.
"My wife lost her aunty to breast cancer, her grandmother also battled it and I lost my grandmother to bowl cancer," said Mr Cameron. "I decided it was about time to help the cause, since I know Cancer Council is heavily reliant on community fundraising."
Other Blue Mountains golf clubs supporting The Longest Day include Springwood, Wentworth Falls and Leura.
Denise Daynes, community relations coordinator for the Cancer Council, said: "We rely on the generosity of people like Ben to work towards our vision of a cancer-free future. It's been a tough year for everyone, and we really appreciate those clubs who are able to support this initiative by allowing golfing fundraisers to play for free at their club."
