Two young men have been charged after allegedly bashing a bus driver in Victoria's north who told them to put a face mask on when boarding.

The bus was travelling from Wodonga to Adelaide when it stopped at Kerang bus depot on Wednesday morning to pick up passengers.

All passengers were asked to wear masks before the 54-year-old driver pulled away, with one of the men allegedly then becoming aggressive and seriously assaulting him.

As he pulled over, a second man is accused of assaulting him further before he was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The Kerang men, aged 20 and 21, have both been charged with a range of offences including affray and assault by kicking, police confirmed on Saturday.

The 20-year-old has been remanded to face local court on Monday, while the 21-year-old was bailed to appear in court in March next year.
