Impressive English champions Manchester City have claimed top spot in the Premier League for the first time this season as Bernardo Silva scored twice to inspire their 3-1 victory at Watford.
West Ham had shook up the Premier League title race earlier on Saturday by coming from behind twice to beat Chelsea 3-2 at home.
Liverpool then took immediate advantage as Divock Origi's injury-time goal secured a 1-0 win over Wolverhampton as Jurgen Klopp's men leapfrogged Chelsea into second.
But slick City proved they were the main beneficiaries in the day's late game, with Raheem Sterling's early header paving the way to a comfortable win for Pep Guardiola's side.
The brilliant Portuguese Silva, one of the players of the season, fired in from a tight angle in the 31st minute and then put City in cruise control just past the hour mark when he curled a delightful effort into the top corner.
In truth City's winning margin should have been bigger against a struggling Watford side who were given some late hope when Cucho Hernandez pulled a goal back.
Their fifth successive league win, though, lifted them to 35 points from 15 games as they retook control in what is shaping up to be a three-way title tussle for the title.
West Ham, though, are proving to be quite the stumbling block for England's top teams, even if they needed a bit of luck to secure their latest statement win.
David Moyes' side had already handed Liverpool their only season's loss in the league, beaten Tottenham, and knocked both Manchester clubs out of the League Cup.
This win underlined the Hammers' own top-four credentials, even though it required a fluke late goal to complete the comeback.
Arthur Masuaku swung a speculative 87th-minute cross in from the left wing which veered toward goal and caught Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy by surprise.
Mendy dived to keep the ball out but managed to push it only inside his own near post.
"It was a bit of a lucky goal," Moyes conceded. "But you have to get the ball in the box, you have to try it."
Later, Liverpool missed a slew of chances before Origi finally secured the win after being set up by Mo Salah.
Elsewhere, Newcastle earned their first league win of the season, at the 15th attempt, as they held on after Callum Wilson's first-half goal to beat fellow relegation strugglers Burnley 1-0.
Neal Maupay scored eight minutes into injury time to rescue a 1-1 draw for Brighton at Southampton, who had gone ahead with a brilliant first-half goal from Armando Broja.
