The Queensland government won't send any elected officials to Beijing Winter Olympics, and it's unclear if the Brisbane lord mayor or other members of the Brisbane 2032 taskforce will go.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison says Australian government officials are boycotting the event due to human rights abuses in China.
The decision comes after President Joe Biden announced earlier this week the US would not send diplomatic officials to the Olympics, citing the Chinese government's ongoing genocide against minority Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang and other human rights abuses.
The Brisbane 2032 Olympics taskforce, including state government and Brisbane council officials, has also been invited to the event by the International Olympic Committee.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says she respects the prime minister's boycott and elected state government officials won't be attend.
"Attendance of government representatives at the Beijing Winter Olympics is a matter for the federal government," she said in a statement on Wednesday.
"The federal government's decision includes Queensland.
"We wish our athletes every success."
It's understood the state government is still considering whether certain members of the Brisbane 2032 taskforce will be able to attend the Beijing Games.
It's also unclear whether Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schinner or any council staff will attend the Beijing Olympics as his office hasn't responded to AAP's inquiries.
Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) chief executive Matt Carroll insisted that Queensland government and Brisbane council officials can go to Beijing to observe the games.
"They're not representing the Australian government," he told reporters on Wednesday.
"They're there... as the Brisbane 2032 taskforce, as they will be invited to send delegations to Paris, to Milano Cortina, to LA, as well."
